PROFESSIONAL HAIRSTYLING DIPLOMA (1500 Hours)

Hairstyling offers the opportunity for a lifetime career in one of our largest and most respected industries. The course is offered on a full-time basis for a period of 12 months. The course consists of 1500 hours of training at the Academy. After graduating from the course, the student is required to complete 2000 hours of on-the-job apprenticeship training before writing the Certificate of Qualification examination to become a licensed Hairstylist.

Students will be exposed to the most relevant and modern aspects of Hair Styling. Students will be given the knowledge required to undertake a career in Hair Styling and start their own business in the Hair Styling field. Students will also learn the importance of the professional ethics and work with L’Oreal Professional Color Treatments, Matrix and Rusk products.

Health and Safety

Upon successful completion of the reportable subject, the apprentice will be able to demonstrate safe working practices in the workplace and be able to perform sanitization procedures according to related health legislation.

	Maintain safe and clean work-site
	Hair color Specialist
	Select and demonstrate use of personal protective clothing and equipment
	Describe related health and safety legislation
	Identify locations of Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
	Perform consultation with client
	Protect the client while reclining client into the shampoo basin
	Recognize an emergency situation
	Ensure safety and protection of client’s eyes, ears and skin
	Demonstrate the preparation and procedures to sanitize tools, implements and equipment
	List and describe the methods of decontamination and infection control that are used

Treat Hair and Scalp

Upon successful completion of the reportable subject, apprentice is able to provide scalp and hair treatments.

	Prepare scalp and hair for in –salon treatment
	Select hair product and interpret manufacturer’s specifications for use
	Select scalp product and interpret manufacturer’s specifications for use
	Select finishing product and interpret manufacture’s specification for use

Salon Functions

Upon successful completion of the reportable subject, the apprentice will be able to perform routine salon functions by communicating with clients, colleagues and co-workers.

Cut and Style Hair

Upon successful completion of the reportable subject, the apprentice will be able to cut hair and to style hair to desired shape or style using a variety of styling tools to meet client requirements and specifications.

Permanent Wave and Chemical Relaxing

Upon successful completion of the reportable subject, the apprentice is able to perform a permanent wave using curl method of verification according to hair type and to style.

Color and Lighten Hair

Upon successful completion of the reportable subject, the apprentice is able to perform a color to the level desired. The apprentice will also be able to lighten tone, highlight, and lowlight hair or remove artificial pigment to the level of color desired.
